Deities
Introduction to the Deities of Aetheria
In Aetheria, the gods do not reign—they survive. Once allies and equals to the dragons, the divine now cower in the shadows, hunted by their former brethren. The Sundering’s chaos set the stage for harmony, but a catastrophic act of magic, the casting of the first 10th-level spell, turned balance into betrayal. This spell, known as The Devourer’s Binding, forever altered the dragons’ nature. No longer sustained by mortal prey or elemental energy, they were cursed to draw their strength from consuming gods.
The fallout was swift and brutal. Faced with starvation, dragons turned on their celestial kin, beginning a relentless hunt for divine sustenance. Now, the gods of VeilRift live in hiding—some buried deep within the earth, others shrouded in veils of secrecy, gathering small bands of devoted followers. Faith survives only in whispers, and worship is a dangerous act of defiance.
But the rifts, seeking to prevent the collapse of Aetheria, intervene in their own enigmatic way. They have been drawing gods from other realms for centuries, casting them into the dragons’ web like flies to a spider. Some gods adapt, rallying mortal resistance and forging new domains in VeilRift. Others fall, consumed by the dragons or lost in the chaos.
Faith in a Fractured World
Faith in Aetheria reflects the fractured nature of the realm itself:
Worship of Dragons: For much of the population, the dragons are the true divine, their overwhelming power leaving little room for rival faiths.
Casual Devotion: Deities are honored in passing—for safe passage, a bountiful harvest, or protection in desperate times—but few mortals place them above the dragons.
The Devout Few: True worshippers of the gods are rare but unshakable. Often driven underground, these zealots cling to their faith, spreading their cause in defiance of the dragons’ hunger.
The Dragons' Dominance
Dragons are not just predators; they are deities in their own right, though unwilling ones:
Sustenance of Divinity: Dragons survive only by consuming gods, a bitter reality that fractures their once-majestic unity.
The Hunt: Relentless and cunning, dragons employ loyal followers, arcane spells, and raw power to track down hidden gods.
Rivalries of Survival: Even among dragons, alliances are fleeting, as competition for divine prey forces them into conflict.
Aetheria’s Fragile Balance
The interplay between gods, dragons, and mortals shapes the fabric of Aetheria. Dungeon Masters can explore:
Divine Resistance: Gods forging secret alliances with mortals to reclaim their power.
Draconic Conflict: Rival dragons vying for dominion over divine prey, creating a battlefield of titanic power.
Faith in Crisis: Mortals questioning their loyalty to gods or dragons, struggling to find hope in a world of chaos.
"Here, even the divine must adapt—or perish. For in VeilRift, survival is not granted, it is earned."
